Blog Post 4: Watch a Movie By Ramy Mohamed

Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris

I decided for this post that i’d watch one of my favorite series, Mad men. Mad men takes place during the 60’s and highlights the social upheaval for both men and women at the time. One of the characters that really stuck out to me in this series was Joan, she started off as a office manager and initially believed that she wanted to find a husband and quit her job so that she could be a “respectable” housewife. Of course many women at the time were expected to do so. In fact in the 60’s people assumed that the only reason a women would work is if they failed to find a man to support them. The reason why I like Joan’s character is because she rejected these expectations and decided to work anyways. As I stated earlier Joan started off thinking she wanted what was expected of her from society, however as time passed and responsibilities grew so did she. She turned out to be a strong individual that didn’t need a man to lead a happy life. In fact she eventually divorced her husband and it didn’t effect her negatively one bit. I think what would have been the most damaging thing that could have happened to Joan was not working. Not working would have meant that she would have lost the excitement and validation she got from running the administrative side of the advertising agency. Not only that but, without her job she wouldn’t have had been able to leave her husband in the first place, thus no independence or freedom. It goes to show that the societal norms in the 60’s actually held women back from being financially independent / individually free. Those brave women that chose to work despite the stigma learned this truth firsthand and were better for it.

Blog Post 5 By Ramy Mohamed

Hello everyone I hope you and your families are well. It’s a bit of a crazy situation we’re all in. I’m staying positive and i’m happy I get to spend time with my family. We found out that domestic flights out of New york are no longer available, so my brother that just came back from Alaska is going to stay longer (so my mom’s happy but his wife is not). I’ve found the hardest thing about this pandemic is trying to reorganize your life. I do hope that we all get through this and what has helped me is by staying productive and planing ahead (knowing that eventually you won’t be in this situation and will have a life to lead).

Blog Post 3: A different future By Ramy Mohamed

In a world where  feminist and anti-racist activism has succeeded and we live in a more egalitarian and less oppressive world we would see a much more diverse and harmonious society. In this Utopian scenario I would see a lot more females perusing more stereotypical male jobs, perhaps more males doing stereotypical female jobs. I think that topics such as wage gap would disappear, perhaps even gender roles would cease to exist. crimes such as rape and domestic violence would decrease. My day to day might be different who knows? Perhaps instead of boxing class i would attend dance class or do something society would deem as more feminine leaning. This is a great scenario but one that is unattainable hence the U in Utopia (no place).

I am interested in exploring issues of women and sports especially at the professional setting. At this level of competition money is the main objective. I will explore the financial battles many women have with the different athletic organizations that they belong to. These athletes like their male counterparts sacrifice their health to perform at their very best so that they can entertain their fans. Women deserve equal pay to men in their respective sport.

What is Feminism? By Ramy Mohamed

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Feminism is the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. Although largely originating in the West, feminism is manifested worldwide and is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” I agree with this definition of feminism because I believe that women should be equal socially, economically, and politically to men. I really like this definition I found in the article Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay stating, “I believe in equal opportunities for women and men. I believe in women having reproductive freedom and affordable and unfettered access to the health care they need. I believe women should be paid as much as men for doing the same work.” I will be focusing on women’s suffrage for my project because of how important it is. Women being able to vote is extremely important since politics allow us to shape/change the social and the economic aspects of society. I believe I will focus primarily on first wave: suffrage. Since the pioneers of feminism had to be especially brave to tackle this civil right.
