I interviewed my family about the women’s liberation movement, but as they grew up in the Dominican Republic during the 60s and 70s they didn’t know much about it. They do remember hearing about “Las Hermanas Mirabal” which was a group of sisters that helped free the country from the rule of the dictator Trujillo. With their actions they advanced a revolution that ended the dictatorship. Their actions set up to free a country that eventually trickled down to my family where they saw how strong women can be. As my grandfather died at a young age, my grandmother now had to take care of her 4 children. Although Dominican culture is still behind in terms of progressive views, women like las hermanas mirabal helped change the perspective of women being weak, and showed that they can be history altering figures.

If there was an alternative universe where racism and sexism was gone because of the civil rights movement and the feminist movements of the 60s. I think that the country would be divided into different countries. If their movement was pushed further to people that opposed it would not be supporting it. I think they would all get together and form their own country. This would make one country where it the movements succeeded, while another country is formed where hate and discrimination is present.
What is Feminism? – Guillermo
Based on the google search of Feminism, Feminism is, “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes”. Based on this definition, I definitely agree with it. There is no reason why men and women shouldn’t be on an even playing field, and nobody should be turned down just because of their gender.
The problem is that some media portrays feminism as a man-hating agenda that is used to create an unequal playing field on the other side, when in reality that’s a small minority and majority of people just want equality. This is supported in the reading “Bad Feminist” by Roxanne Gay, and she states, “When feminism falls short of our expectations, we decide the problems is with feminism rather than with the flawed people who act in the name of the movement”
