Blog Post 5 By Ramy Mohamed

Hello everyone I hope you and your families are well. It’s a bit of a crazy situation we’re all in. I’m staying positive and i’m happy I get to spend time with my family. We found out that domestic flights out of New york are no longer available, so my brother that just came back from Alaska is going to stay longer (so my mom’s happy but his wife is not). I’ve found the hardest thing about this pandemic is trying to reorganize your life. I do hope that we all get through this and what has helped me is by staying productive and planing ahead (knowing that eventually you won’t be in this situation and will have a life to lead).

Hi everyone, hope you are safe and healthy. I have been adjusting to this lockdown slowly and at my own pace. I understand that this is a worldwide crisis and everyone has made adjustments to their lives. Thankfully, I am home with my family in a safe environment. I am focusing on schoolwork, exercise and doing activities that I never had time to do because of my busy schedule. Painting for example, is something that has been keeping me sane through this quarantine.

Check In

Hello,

During these hard moments of having to stay in, I have been spending time with family with little or no outdoor activity. I have also been trying to keep up with school work which is also important. Also, watching Netflix to forget about the chaos for some time. Lastly., if I want to go outside I make it to where I’m only outside for a very short walk to not go insane.

Hi everyone! I hope you guys are safe and keeping yourselves busy with school, family etc. I’m fine and I adjusted well to being at home. But hearing about the tragedies as a result of the pandemic everyday brings my spirits down. I am very concerned about my grandma because she lives with us and we don’t want her to get sick. Stay strong there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

I am doing well, just a bit stressed, due to all the sudden changes around me. I hope this semester is a success. To keep busy I have just been listening to music and writing, as it’s very therapeutic for me. Professor Gwen, I thank you for allowing us to adjust by not putting too much pressure on us about assignments. I know it has been hard for all of us.

I am doing okay. I am a little tired from the classes because I have to stay in my house and I can’t really move around as I would like to. I would like to go outside and get some sun or just sit on the steps outside so that I could have a change of scenery. I am a little bored from staying cooped up in my house and seeing the same people everyday. I am busy too on top of that since I have siblings and I have to help them with their online courses while I try to do my work. But overall I am blessed I am okay and alive. And hopefully you are all okay and doing your best in this crazy turn of events.

Independent Project Part 2

I need to know more about in what ways were men controlling society and how come they were the center of society. My project relates to is more into the social aspect and society aspect of research. I have to look more into the lives of black and brown women lives compared to white women. I have to see the influence of men and no men in their lives and see how they are treated. I have to see the importance of how the family will be with the presence of a man being there vs no man in the child’s life. Each factor relate because I am trying to see why the purpose of having men as the center or the role model of society. Women and men were suppose to have equal rights but they aren’t since women didn’t get their rights until the 1920’s. I am trying to see how they influence the economy, culture, masculinity for boys, and how women should be treated or act in society.

The world that feminist and anti-racist activism has succeeded in being a beautiful world to be able to express and do whatever you want. Where there are no oppression, hatred, and segregation, I imagine an ideal world that people genuinely treat each other with love and dignity. The world that every day is waking up that you don’t have to worry about your insecurity, you don’t worry about people’s judgment. Confidently going to class that not being worry about bullying because of your sexuality, ethnicity, or even applying for the job being able to work like everybody else regardless of your race or gender.

The show I decided to watch is called Cable Girls, it is a Netflix series that currently has 5 seasons. It’s actually a Spanish show that gets translated into English, and it takes place in the 1920’s in Spain. During this period of time, Spain has just gotten their first national telephone company in Madrid. The main characters are the telephone operators, or known as the “cable girls,” who are four young women who get jobs at this company, but it becomes more than just work. It depicts a progression that’s being made during a time where women are starting to gain more equality with men. Throughout the entirety of the show, these women continue to break barriers and go against the norm of a what a “lady” should be or act like. For example, one of the characters Carlota falls in love with a woman named Angeles, who happens to be her manager, while she’s still in a relationship with a man named Miguel, which then proceeds to be an open relationship between all three of them. In order to continue her relationships, she defies her parents and moves out of her home and comfort and breaks societal rules to pursue her life the way she chooses it to be. Carlota and her partner Angeles continue to receive scrutiny from outsiders and get shamed for their love, but they continue to persevere, while also having the support of Carlota’s boyfriend Miguel, which was the shocking part of it all. As the show goes on, Angeles comes to the realization that she wants to go through a gender transformation which was also a very foreign concept during this time period. After much research, Angeles finds a hospital that was known to have done these transformations before, but after arriving there she was shocked to see that it was church members in disguise and they held her captive thinking they could “cure” her from wanting to change genders. This show relates to our class in the sense that it shows the difficulties women had to and still go through to justify their choices and their desires/aspirations. It also gives a look into how far we have come as a society now, but yet not too far because there are still people who judge and think the way the characters did back in the 1920’s. Women have the right to do whatever they please with their bodies, and who they choose to love or be attracted to. The show just goes to show that if not a specific person, that there were always situations that tried to control women from doing what they really want to do.
