Kill Bill

This Tarantino film is most known for its violence and reversal of gender roles. The female protagonist, Uma Thurman, pictured in the photo above plays a very violent role that a man would typically play in similar films. Thurman is fighting in various scenes and is portraying masculinity in her style of fighting. Even though she is portraying masculinity in her fighting style, she still has feminine qualities about her appearance. Not only does Thurman have a masculine role but so do the other ladies of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. For example, Vivica A. Fox plays Vernita Green who is an assassin but also a mother and a wife who pretty much lives a double life. This film also takes a lot of influence from Kung Fu films where men typically play the lead roles. You can especially see this influence in the sword fighting scene between Lucy Lui and Uma Thurman. Lucy Lui’s character also shows a switch of gender roles depicting a women leading a group of men by intimidating them with her sword and fighting abilities.

If society was more diverse and harmonious, feminism and anti-activism would succeed and the world was more egalitarian that would be the Utopian scenario. Females would be working in jobs that are more viewed to be “male” jobs, and maybe males would be doing jobs that are viewed to be more “female”, or maybe gender roles would not even exist. If this utopian society were to exist my days would probably be pretty different than they are now. Maybe instead of going to the gym and feeling self conscious in the weight lifting area, the men would be the ones feeling self conscious or there would be no need to feel self conscious in a place that is not meant to be divided by gender.

In a less oppressed world where feminist and and anti-racist activism has succeeded there would be equal pay and equal jobs and opportunities for all. Jobs that where formally viewed as masculine would be available to all genders and the same would go for jobs viewed as feminine. Discrimination of any kind would not exist and therefore police brutality and wars would not be a thing. An average day for me would still consist of me going to school but the topics being taught would be a little different. News stories would be less about violence and problematic things and more about peaceful and kind stories.

Blog Post 3: A different future By Ramy Mohamed

In a world where  feminist and anti-racist activism has succeeded and we live in a more egalitarian and less oppressive world we would see a much more diverse and harmonious society. In this Utopian scenario I would see a lot more females perusing more stereotypical male jobs, perhaps more males doing stereotypical female jobs. I think that topics such as wage gap would disappear, perhaps even gender roles would cease to exist. crimes such as rape and domestic violence would decrease. My day to day might be different who knows? Perhaps instead of boxing class i would attend dance class or do something society would deem as more feminine leaning. This is a great scenario but one that is unattainable hence the U in Utopia (no place).

Utopian Society

If the future where feminism and anti- racist activism succeeded then it would be more equal for women and all races. Life in society would be easy going and soon stereotypes and how people are seen will slowly change but it would be hard for others. Even if the society may be perfect, there may be factions of people who would be anti-feminism and racist activism. So it may not last long and the period of peace may end in maybe 100 years or less. But other than that the classes and jobs will be diverse and everyone will get an opportunity to get jobs and teachers of all kinds will be able to teach students.

A Different Future Answer

If I lived in a more egalitarian world I would put on the news and it wouldn’t be focused on hate crimes, women fighting for their reproductive rights, and people being taken from their families by ICE. Instead it would filled with reports on how the world is taking on climate change, how billionaires and celebrities are donating more generously to organizations that need help, and how communities from different faiths and backgrounds are helping each other. More female representatives would be in the White House and we would see more women succeeding in all types of jobs . I would go outside and see my neighbors and others talking and connecting with each other more. People will be multilingual so that they can communicate with everyone. I would walk down my street and say hello to everyone and see strangers of different genders treating each other with respect and dignity. I wouldn’t be as skeptical towards men. No one would be judged or underestimated because of the color of their skin or their race, religion, ethnicity or gender.

If there was an alternative universe where racism and sexism was gone because of the civil rights movement and the feminist movements of the 60s. I think that the country would be divided into different countries. If their movement was pushed further to people that opposed it would not be supporting it. I think they would all get together and form their own country. This would make one country where it the movements succeeded, while another country is formed where hate and discrimination is present.

A Different Future

If an anti-racist world exists, I would not have to be turned to the side after waiting 20 minutes at the car service office for a white family to take the first car available. I would not have to look twice as hard for a job that would be easily given to another person, even if I am more qualified. I would not be followed in a store or be seen as a person who may not afford something. I wouldn’t worry so much for my brothers being out at night and not coming home or getting injured because of their skin color. Women working hard would have the same opportunity to move up and get promotions. I would wake to go to class and get on the public transport without everyone staring to watch what I will pull out my pocket or my bag. I would be treated like a normal person and because of the anti-racist world I won’t be stared at. I think my job would be filled with more smart and capable women, with more women in power.
