Feminism

Feminism has a host of interpretations when it comes down to it’s definition. I agree most closely with the interpretation offered by Roxanne Gray in the excerpt of “Bad Feminist” that our class read. She offers that feminism is a movement consisting of flawed individuals who aren’t what society would deem “perfect” or “capable” fighting for their deserved right as human beings to be heard & included. She also touches on the fact that not every woman will automatically take to the “feminist label” even with knowledge of who and what this movement is in fact fighting for. However, that does not mean that the individuals who are choosing to actively fight to oppose patriarchal societies’ norms should give up or protect these women’s rights any less.

My proposed definition of feminism is a movement of individuals who are seeking to reshape society’s current structure for the betterment of women & their freedoms (or lack thereof). I think the first issue to tackle would be the flaws within the capitalist system that hinder women’s ability to fully thrive in today’s workforce. Another barrier that I would like to see broken is that of which we have between each other as women. In order to successfully address the issues women face within society today, (whether that be within the workforce, reproductive rights violations, even class & race bias) women must stand in solidarity for change.

What is Feminism?

Feminism means to work towards achieving gender equality. To believe that everyone is born equal, despite race or sexuality. Feminism is about working against the systems that are built to keep certain groups of people oppressed. It includes a fight for acknowledging how race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic statuses affect feminism. It allows people to look at how things not in a way of how it is, but how the world can be.

Feminism: What is it?-Julia Shapiro

Back in the day, feminism meant hating men. The notion around the word “feminism” was that feminists (which were only women) try to exceed men in this world to be “superior”. To me, hating men and trying to be “superior” as a women is NOT what feminism means. The people who created this definition of feminism were mainly conservative men, who were/ are afraid to see change between genders and sexualities. The definition of feminism that I agree with is to fight for the equal rights everyone in this country is promised to have. Compared to what the notion on feminism was a decade ago, now in the year 2020 the notion has shifted a little. After so many years of fighting for rights, women are now receiving access to basic needs. Women of color, poor women, and queer women are still fighting for their own specific rights. Although there has been a great deal of improvement made when it comes to women’s rights, I still question the fact that women are left out of the movement. My question for my feminist project would be “How do we seal the divide in the feminist movement?”

To me feminism is all about the empowerment, protection and equality of all women. I strongly believe women as a collective should all have each other’s backs and understand each women’s unique struggles so we can unite and bring that attention to the rest of society. Women of color face several hardships that I think every feminist should acknowledge and be educated on and understand that there should not be a division on feminists. I believe anyone can be a feminist and that being a feminist does not mean women claim as “the superior gender”, but that we want a sense of unity instead of division. To me a priority is that women should have full rights to their body and should have the choice to do whatever they want with them including reproductive rights. There should be more accommodation to women’s menstrual cycles as that is a big emotional drainer to most women every month and we need to focus on mental health as much as physical. Can’t believe I even have to say it but equal pay! Women need equal pay! Women overall need to be heard and listened to for progression to continue.

What is Feminism?

The general definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.” I do not completely agree with this definition. I do think there are radical feminists that are far beyond the point of equality and are more about female dominance. They no longer seek to coexist.

However, after reading Feminism is for Everybody by Bell Hooks, feminism is more than that. Feminism is also the push for equality or change through movements and ideologies that reflect change and equality for the sexes. It does even have to be through movements. But after reading Hooks, it can also be redefining terms that have been placed on “femininity” or on women. Being a woman and defying the double-standards and stereotypes placed against us, is also feminism. First, it should tackle the issue of a woman’s role in the household. Secondly, how students are seen and treated in the education system, then take it to the workplace. Some of our most important lessons and or sense of identity starts at home. Little girls see their mothers obey their fathers and place themselves on a lower scale, and this follows them to the outside world. Just like Paulo Freire mentioned, the education system or classrooms are institutions and places of oppression. There is a sense of hierarchy between students and teachers. Students being the oppressed, and educators being the oppressors. Once we tackle the root of the problem. Both household and classroom are the first places people are exposed to oppression (especially at an early age), so it leaves the workplace to be one of the last places that needs to be targeted. Hopefully by the time changes are made at home and at school, oppression in the workplace and other places would be less. The focal point of my feminist project would be the role of women in the household. Coming from a traditional Caribbean family, there is a lot of pressure to play the role of a “housewife.” While seemingly normal, it is also damaging and self-depreciating. Women are sometimes not taught their FULL worth and capabilities. So we subject and confine ourselves to these social roles, that are not doing us justice.

What is Feminism?

From the Merriam Webster’s website there are two definitions of feminism . The first definition is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes. The second definition is organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interest. I agree with these definitions but my own personal definition of feminism is fighting for equal rights for every sex and the movement of supporting, and caring for each other. We should educate everyone from all backgrounds, ages, and genders about feminism. Anyone can be a feminist, we have the power as a society to change the outdated stereotypes against women and feminism. After all we want to live in a world where everyone is treated fairly and equally. For my women’s project I will focus on the impact feminism has in our society today.

Feminism- Allisa Noel

I believe that feminism means equality. Feminism means that everyone is equal despite their race, sexuality, gender identity, and religion. People have to understand that feminism does not only involve women. Just because men have a penis, most of them believe that they are better at everything than women. They feel that they more “superior” than women. Women are not the only ones who can be feminists. Men can be feminists as well. I fail to understand why the term feminism has a derogatory meaning behind it. I can assume that it was a bad meaning behind it because men fear that the uprising of feminism will take them out of power and control. I also believe that it is because men think that feminists will control the world and take men out of it.

What Is Feminism?

Feminism is the theory of political, economic, and social quality of the sexes on behalf of women’s rights. Males tend to benefit from their norm of believing that they are superior and dominant over women. Unfair work pay also plays a role into this because how is it fair that women are doing the same job as men, yet are getting paid less? The videos assigned really put into perspective how this is continuously happening and because of the way men are brought up, being taught that being dominant and having a women obey at all times is the way it should be, which is very wrong. My focus point for my feminist project would be to dig deeper and be able to work forward with making rights to those females who combat this every single day.

Feminism

To be a feminist meant you hated men and everything that women do is try to exceed men in this world because we want to be “superior.” That’s the notion around the word feminism, but that’s not at all true. People who are afraid to see change between genders, sexualities create this pre-conceived notion and spread this message because to see women, women of color, poor women, queer women have equal power is not what’s supposed to happen, and usually the people who are afraid are, not surprising, old, white, conservative men. To be a feminist is to fight for the equal rights everyone in this country has but are limited to women who are not granted those same rights. A decade ago, the term “feminism” freaked people out and whoever considered themselves to be a feminist would be shunned or not even taken seriously because, the access to equal education, housing, healthcare for women was not something to consider at all since it’s not important for them as it is to everyone else. Now, in the year 2020, that notion has shifted a little, not too much so no need to get excited, but it seems to be going in the right direction of giving women the access to basic needs, which is ridiculous that it’s taking so long. But there is still a group of women who are completely left out in the women’s movement which are: women of color, poor women, queer women. When will these women be able to raise their voice and speak out for their right to their own body and mind? Why do men think it’s okay to make choices for women when we are our own person? It’s common sense not to do that, but I guess the stigma of women not having any freedom is still embedded in their minds so they think women now will abide. There has been great progress in the fight for women’s equality but my question for my feminist project would be: when will we fight for the women that are left out of this movement and have been for a long time? Why is there still a divide in the feminist movement when it comes to race, age, sexuality?
