Blog Post 2: Feminism

One definition of feminism according to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary is “organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests”. I agree with this definition more than the definition of having equality for both sexes. I do not believe that ‘equality’ is truly attainable for everyone depending on their life situation. Also, women and men may not always share the same concerns, as they experience life differently.

Feminism begins with changing the way women are viewed by majority of societies. The traditional narrative of a woman only existing to act as a mother and care-taker places limits on her abilities. When a woman is viewed in this way, patriarchal societies have the attitude that it is not necessary for a woman to have certain rights, because she will never fill a dominant role. Her fate will be contributing to motherly duties. This gives to the notion that a woman does not possess important ideas or opinions that will benefit society. It is difficult to change this perception of women in certain societies based on culture, religion, etc. Aside from this traditional narrative, feminism should focus on the experiences and oppression faced by women of all backgrounds. One of the issues it should tackle is ensuring paid maternity leave for women in the workforce. Another issue it should tackle as brought up by Rebecca Solnit is the seriousness of assaults such as rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment. If I had a feminist project, I would create a program that empowers and serves as a safe space for teenage girls. They would be guided on personal topics such as how they should be treated in a relationship, sexual health, etc.

What is Feminism ?

Feminism is defined in the dictionary as the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. I agree with this definition because every person should have rights equal to each other regardless of sex. Women are entitled to the same things as men, wether it is health related , work or etc… My definition of feminism is a movement that is constantly changing and adapting to the needs of women everyday. I feel the first issue that needs to be tackled first is equal pay, working just as hard deserves pay the reflects the work done. The second thing would be healthcare products to be made more available and affordable. As for the focal point of my project I have no clue what it is or what it will be.

One definition of feminism is: The advocacy of women’s right on the basis of the equality of the sexes. I agree with this definition because every feminist is fighting for their voices to be hear in oder to make a change in the way women are being treated. In my opinion feminism is wanting to better yourself in order to be seen as equal, I believe every women that feels good about themselves would not tolerate being treated like they are less. After reading Feminism is for everybody, I think most people said that they are feminist and others are against feminism because they do not understand the point of it. Feminism represents women of all backgrounds, a feminist should be involve in a one of the movement in oder for them to get the sense of being part of something bigger than what they expected.

What is Feminism – Melissa Ocasio

When I think of feminism I think of Beyonce and her song Flawless, which is all about female empowerment, but not at the cost of making men feel worthless. In my opinion being a Feminist is someone who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

My definition of Feminism – Kate Vanderbeck

I felt that I connected most with the definition that Roxane Gay provided in her introduction in Bad Feminist. Her definition focused on equal opportunities for women and men, women’s reproductive freedom & access to health care, equal pay for equal work, supporting the choices of women (even those we might not make for ourselves), and that equality & freedom is to be defined by the woman who wishes it.

I also found interesting that she mentioned the often misinformed definition of feminism as “You are an angry, sex-hating, man-hating victim lady person.” I think that this is an unfortunately common misconception about feminism, one that has kept people who would otherwise consider themselves feminists from doing so out of fear. I can remember having conversations about feminism when I was younger, and feeling that I had to clarify “I’m not one of THOSE feminists, I don’t want to burn bras, I just want equality for women.” This preconceived negativity has been used to try and keep the feminist movement stagnant and ineffective.

I think that the priority in modern day feminism should be on intersectionality. Lifting up women of color and queer people who have often been excluded from the mainstream “Feminism ™ ” conversation is the way forward. Listening to and supporting those of us feminists who are the most marginalized is the clearest way to bring about gender equality for everyone.

What is Feminism? – Guillermo

Based on the google search of Feminism, Feminism is, “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes”. Based on this definition, I definitely agree with it. There is no reason why men and women shouldn’t be on an even playing field, and nobody should be turned down just because of their gender.

The problem is that some media portrays feminism as a man-hating agenda that is used to create an unequal playing field on the other side, when in reality that’s a small minority and majority of people just want equality. This is supported in the reading “Bad Feminist” by Roxanne Gay, and she states, “When feminism falls short of our expectations, we decide the problems is with feminism rather than with the flawed people who act in the name of the movement”

What is Feminism? By Ramy Mohamed

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Feminism is the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. Although largely originating in the West, feminism is manifested worldwide and is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” I agree with this definition of feminism because I believe that women should be equal socially, economically, and politically to men. I really like this definition I found in the article Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay stating, “I believe in equal opportunities for women and men. I believe in women having reproductive freedom and affordable and unfettered access to the health care they need. I believe women should be paid as much as men for doing the same work.” I will be focusing on women’s suffrage for my project because of how important it is. Women being able to vote is extremely important since politics allow us to shape/change the social and the economic aspects of society. I believe I will focus primarily on first wave: suffrage. Since the pioneers of feminism had to be especially brave to tackle this civil right.

Feminism

Feminism has a host of interpretations when it comes down to it’s definition. I agree most closely with the interpretation offered by Roxanne Gray in the excerpt of “Bad Feminist” that our class read. She offers that feminism is a movement consisting of flawed individuals who aren’t what society would deem “perfect” or “capable” fighting for their deserved right as human beings to be heard & included. She also touches on the fact that not every woman will automatically take to the “feminist label” even with knowledge of who and what this movement is in fact fighting for. However, that does not mean that the individuals who are choosing to actively fight to oppose patriarchal societies’ norms should give up or protect these women’s rights any less.

My proposed definition of feminism is a movement of individuals who are seeking to reshape society’s current structure for the betterment of women & their freedoms (or lack thereof). I think the first issue to tackle would be the flaws within the capitalist system that hinder women’s ability to fully thrive in today’s workforce. Another barrier that I would like to see broken is that of which we have between each other as women. In order to successfully address the issues women face within society today, (whether that be within the workforce, reproductive rights violations, even class & race bias) women must stand in solidarity for change.

What is Feminism ?

Feminism is the ability to have an equal opportunity to do anything.

For women and their bodies to not to be viewed as a commodity but be seen as a human equal to any other human.

For men to be able to be emotional and deal with their emotions in a healthy way instead of destructive and not to be seen as non-masculine.
