I had a little trouble at first. I am sure there are many ways, but this is how I did it.
First, I logged in to my hypothesis account and then I installed the chrome extension to make things easier, but it was not working.
I then went to the website itself ( https://hypothes.is/ ) and clicked “insert link” at the top, where the other tabs are. Copy the URL of the passage or text you are going to annotate and paste it.
The website should pop up and on the right hand side of your screen, the hypothessis attachment should be there. Click the “<” to extend the menu and it should be visible. There are two options, I believe by default it will be set to public. Before uploading your annotations, at the top of the menu, set it to the WGST 1001 Spring 2020.
After that you can begin annotating. HIGHLIGHT (highlight the title as you normally would then the option “annotate” and “highlight” appears. Click highlight) the title of your passage and it should appear at the very top, This easily indictes the selection you were reading to the person who is viewing. To annotate parts of the text, highlight the section as you normally would and the options “annotate” or “highlight” will appear, click annotate. This will open a text bar for you to place your annotation. Continue to do that for the rest of your annotations.
When I was finished, I clicked “Post to WGST 1001 Spring 2020” for each annotation (as I could not find a simpler way to upload everything at one time) and it was posted to the group page.
I am doing okay. About 2 weeks ago I had about 3 asthma attacks within a week. 2 mild ones and one that was extremely scary. It has been a little stressful keeping up with my classes online and having to deal with the stress of keeping up with my family that live in a third world country. Im anxious to resume a normal life, but I am extremely hopeful that this will all simmer down soon despite what the news says. Take this time to focus on yourself and family. I hope you guys are doing well. Stay safe and please stay home.
To disidentify with something means to go against or disagree with the representation or stigma placed against whatever you define yourself as. I think in order to disidentify, you must first be able to identify. By this I mean, you must be able to have this self awareness of who you are and then decide if these social norms or rules places against that category represents what you think it should. If it does not, that is where one disidentifies.
Although I am female, I sometimes disidentify with it. I had many instances where I was expected to “act like a lady,” do houework, or dress a certain way. To many people this is what a female is supposed to committ to, but I disagree with it and therefore, push boundaries. I wear sweats and hoodies and sneakers almost everyday, I do things that my mother for example, would have never done at my age as a female. She would have never disobeyed her mother telling her to clean up while her brothers did absolutely nothing. I did not accept these norms, and I created my own.
I chose this film because it had a leading female role, but also including a male roles who were just as assertive and strong. Although it may seem as the typical female empowerment show, it is much more than that. It incorporates Western culture and African culture, and humanity as a whole. Safiya Sono is the daughter of a dead activist and she fights to honor and carry on her mother’s legacy. She is a spy who works for an agency that is dedicated to protecting Africa.
She faces the sexist stereotypes and double standards that many women in our society have faced in the past and present. Her ability to complete her missions is always doubted no matter how many times she has proven herself to be successful and highly capable. She is commanded and supported by men. Her boss is a man, and her crew are also composed of men. She is the only active woman spy in her field. This shows how even though she is given the leading role, a huge male presence is still included to make a point. I can connect this to many points we have made in class. Sojourner Truth’s “Ain’t I a Woman” speech speaks highly to this because Queen Sono exemplifies what Truth was trying to depict. Although they are just “women,” they can still do twice as much as men can. This also refutes Rousseau’s claims of the purpose of the presence of mea=n and women. He claims that women are supposed to be submissive and are there to basically build a man’s ego and compliment him. He made women out to be weak and to be treated as objects. Queen Sono, depicts the complete opposite. This show displays that there can be a scenarios where the tables are turned. Women can dominate in a environment filled and controlled by the opposite sex.
What makes this show very interesting to me is the continuous challenges Safiya Sono has to face. Her role holds no sympathy. She is faced with the same challenges that her male counterparts face and even more extreme obstacles. She is forced to go against every stereotype and push through her emotions — known to be a females biggest weakness. Society believes females are not as strong and assertive because our emotions get in the way.
There was a specific scene where Queen Sono went on a mission and the location was at a Ball. She was dressed the part and had the objective to gain access and get information from a dealer.Immediately, the man saw her and gained a liking to her and started lying to her about his identity. He was unaware that was a spy. He completely sexualized her, and while she hates it, she still did not break her cover. Eventually he finds out that she is a spy and threatens to kill her if she did not leave. Another enemy was at the Ball (also a man with his male crew), and this created a dangerous confrontation. Queen Sono had no backup and had to fend for herself. Her intel (also a man) warned her to get out of the building, but she refused until she completed her objective. A gun war broke out and she was the only one left standing. Both crews were dead, including the leaders. This relates to the course because it shows just like women in history were underestimated so was Queen Sono. Her sex, made her unfit to many people. In class we’ve talked about many women who were discredited, such as Gloria Steinem. Steinem has managed to accomplish a great deal, but because she is a woman, many of her accomplishments were painted differently. Queen Sono does not directly mention women’s rights, nor is it directly depicted through her story but it can still relate to the oppression and intersectionality that many women continue to face.
In order to contextualize my subject of wages and housework I need to know the basics. Why was this idea created? Who were most active in this movement? What wave of feminism was this discussed? I need to know the demographics and geographies. I think it is important to see what group of people are most concerned or interested in this issue. This relates to women’s history, which contributed to American history and the history of other nations. Unfortunately, this issue only making noise in the UK. Articles are being written in newspapers today to bring about awareness on the working woman. Online news platforms such as independent.co.uk and metro.co.uk are some of the platforms that still shed light on this.
This topic relates to sex, gender, history, social norms and patriarchal factors. While places like the United States and Europe have received more pressure about this issue, I think it is important to understand why other places are not as centered on the work women do at home. There are me oppressive and stricter societies where women are worse off but no-one says anything. Places like the Caribbean and the Middle-East are highly oppressive against women systematically and socially. Despite this, women movements and issues are almost non-existent.
There are not many news networks that still actively advocate for women’s right. They might reminisce on an anniversary, but otherwise, it is barely mentioned. To be widely informed, YouTube, school, and online are your best bet in current times. There it is not much chatter about looking at “housewives” as workers who need to be paid or equating the housework of women to those on the books.
Sex and gender relates to my project because whether you choose to be a woman or once society labels you as one or once the doctor says “its a girl,” your fate is determined. There is a high chance that your family and partners will expect you to nurture and take care the house and others. The pressure is on. Sex and gender determines your role in the house. Some women fail to see beyond what they are confined to because society has already made up their minds for them. Social norms are hard to change. Patriarchy is most heavily used in the house. The woman answers to the man and plays caretaker, cleaner, maid, mom, and cook while the man makes the money. She has little to no say sometimes.
If a feminist and anti-racist activism succeeded and we live in a more egalitarian and less oppressive world, I would wake up to the birds singing. I would wake up even more gleeful to start in a world that I know if for me and not against me. I would be more optimistic and feel safer and so would many other people. My mornings would be normal, but I would wake up praying for it to never end. In this ideal world, I would not take anything for granted, knowing how much sacrifices and struggles it took to get to this state. I would imagine it being a world similar to how it was before Eve ate the apple-blind to our flaws and content with each other. Peaceful. My brother could go about his day without fearing for his life because of his race. My mom would no longer seek to shelter her only daughter. I would be more willing to experience new things.
My average day would consist of going to class with more hope and being able to focus and work harder without having to worry or stress over these social issues. CUNY would offer more intense and confrontational classes on these issues. However, these issues might be eliminated systematically, but it is hard to remove it mentally. I would still come home being annoyed about the ignorant minds, but I will feel better knowing that it cannot extend beyond their thoughts.
I am interested in exploring issues surrounding the role of women in the household as they related to women, gender, and sexuality studies, especially the work of Silvia Federici during the time period of the 1970’s or second-wave feminism.
The general definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.” I do not completely agree with this definition. I do think there are radical feminists that are far beyond the point of equality and are more about female dominance. They no longer seek to coexist.
However, after reading Feminism is for Everybody by Bell Hooks, feminism is more than that. Feminism is also the push for equality or change through movements and ideologies that reflect change and equality for the sexes. It does even have to be through movements. But after reading Hooks, it can also be redefining terms that have been placed on “femininity” or on women. Being a woman and defying the double-standards and stereotypes placed against us, is also feminism. First, it should tackle the issue of a woman’s role in the household. Secondly, how students are seen and treated in the education system, then take it to the workplace. Some of our most important lessons and or sense of identity starts at home. Little girls see their mothers obey their fathers and place themselves on a lower scale, and this follows them to the outside world. Just like Paulo Freire mentioned, the education system or classrooms are institutions and places of oppression. There is a sense of hierarchy between students and teachers. Students being the oppressed, and educators being the oppressors. Once we tackle the root of the problem. Both household and classroom are the first places people are exposed to oppression (especially at an early age), so it leaves the workplace to be one of the last places that needs to be targeted. Hopefully by the time changes are made at home and at school, oppression in the workplace and other places would be less. The focal point of my feminist project would be the role of women in the household. Coming from a traditional Caribbean family, there is a lot of pressure to play the role of a “housewife.” While seemingly normal, it is also damaging and self-depreciating. Women are sometimes not taught their FULL worth and capabilities. So we subject and confine ourselves to these social roles, that are not doing us justice.
