I am interested in exploring issues of violence as they relate to women, gender, and sexuality studies, especially the work of the National Organization of Women (NOW) during the mid 80s – recent times.
A definition of feminism that I found is from bell hooks which clarifies that, “Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” In her book Feminism Is For Everyone I agree with this because feminism is about addressing sexism that occurs in society and before we can do this we must be able to correct the misconceptions and the problems that occur in order to actually fix the problems in society. My definition of feminism is that feminism is a movement to solve the problems of sexism, oppression, gender equality, and minority women problems that have occurred in order for women to gain a level playing field in society. First, the people that would like to be aware of the situation they should educate themselves first. Then we could always give them extra knowledge on what is going on so they can keep up to date. Next, we should try to unite feminism groups together so that everyone can address their situation in order to fully have one mission and not scatter missions all over the place. Finally, we should try to get more legislation on women rights like abortion and other things that is in the laws.
The advocacy of women’s rights based on the equality of the sexes is the definition of feminism. I agree with the definition because there are no reasons why women should be mistreated based on their gender regardless of society’s beliefs, women must have the same freedom that everybody has. The definition of feminism in my word can be defined as the movement of demanding for women rights that equals men as well as having the right to vote, equal pay, etc.. My priority when it comes to feminism is that women should have the right to choose abortion because abortion is still illegal in many states. The second priority can be equal pay as it is still an issue that women receive lower pay than men. The third priority will be the law that protects women from domestic violence. The focal point of my feminist project is to educate people, and advocate for women’s rights, encourage women to speak up.

Feminism is defined in the dictionary as the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. I agree with this definition because every person should have rights equal to each other regardless of sex. Women are entitled to the same things as men, wether it is health related , work or etc… My definition of feminism is a movement that is constantly changing and adapting to the needs of women everyday. I feel the first issue that needs to be tackled first is equal pay, working just as hard deserves pay the reflects the work done. The second thing would be healthcare products to be made more available and affordable. As for the focal point of my project I have no clue what it is or what it will be.
One definition of feminism is: The advocacy of women’s right on the basis of the equality of the sexes. I agree with this definition because every feminist is fighting for their voices to be hear in oder to make a change in the way women are being treated. In my opinion feminism is wanting to better yourself in order to be seen as equal, I believe every women that feels good about themselves would not tolerate being treated like they are less. After reading Feminism is for everybody, I think most people said that they are feminist and others are against feminism because they do not understand the point of it. Feminism represents women of all backgrounds, a feminist should be involve in a one of the movement in oder for them to get the sense of being part of something bigger than what they expected.
I felt that I connected most with the definition that Roxane Gay provided in her introduction in Bad Feminist. Her definition focused on equal opportunities for women and men, women’s reproductive freedom & access to health care, equal pay for equal work, supporting the choices of women (even those we might not make for ourselves), and that equality & freedom is to be defined by the woman who wishes it.
I also found interesting that she mentioned the often misinformed definition of feminism as “You are an angry, sex-hating, man-hating victim lady person.” I think that this is an unfortunately common misconception about feminism, one that has kept people who would otherwise consider themselves feminists from doing so out of fear. I can remember having conversations about feminism when I was younger, and feeling that I had to clarify “I’m not one of THOSE feminists, I don’t want to burn bras, I just want equality for women.” This preconceived negativity has been used to try and keep the feminist movement stagnant and ineffective.
I think that the priority in modern day feminism should be on intersectionality. Lifting up women of color and queer people who have often been excluded from the mainstream “Feminism ™ ” conversation is the way forward. Listening to and supporting those of us feminists who are the most marginalized is the clearest way to bring about gender equality for everyone.
The dictionary definition of feminism is “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” I agree with this definition however I feel that it is missing clarification that feminism, although it may have began as such, is not limited to striving for equality purely based on gender. Feminism spans beyond equality for just the sexes, but for everyone, regardless of race, sexuality, or social class. It is about advocating for the rights for all, but especially the minorities that have been silenced over the course of history. Men, overwhelmingly but not limited to those who are white and cisgender, are at the forefront of society and are often unnecessarily brought into accomplishments made by women, poc, or the lgbtq community. A barrier that I would like to see broken is how women are often pitted against each other, especially in the entertainment industry and on social media. As women, we are supposed to be lifting each other up rather than focusing on who may be more successful. Also, I think if we focused more on educating those who are wrong in the way they understand feminism rather than trying to tear them down, it wouldn’t get such a bad rap and more people would see that it is a movement that can benefit us all.
Based on the google search of Feminism, Feminism is, “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes”. Based on this definition, I definitely agree with it. There is no reason why men and women shouldn’t be on an even playing field, and nobody should be turned down just because of their gender.
The problem is that some media portrays feminism as a man-hating agenda that is used to create an unequal playing field on the other side, when in reality that’s a small minority and majority of people just want equality. This is supported in the reading “Bad Feminist” by Roxanne Gay, and she states, “When feminism falls short of our expectations, we decide the problems is with feminism rather than with the flawed people who act in the name of the movement”
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Feminism is the belief in social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. Although largely originating in the West, feminism is manifested worldwide and is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests.” I agree with this definition of feminism because I believe that women should be equal socially, economically, and politically to men. I really like this definition I found in the article Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay stating, “I believe in equal opportunities for women and men. I believe in women having reproductive freedom and affordable and unfettered access to the health care they need. I believe women should be paid as much as men for doing the same work.” I will be focusing on women’s suffrage for my project because of how important it is. Women being able to vote is extremely important since politics allow us to shape/change the social and the economic aspects of society. I believe I will focus primarily on first wave: suffrage. Since the pioneers of feminism had to be especially brave to tackle this civil right.
